Picking a Real Estate Office: Go To a Meeting!

In my 40 plus years in the real estate business, I’ve worked in a number of real estate offices and the one thing they all have in common are office meetings.  This is when all of the real estate brokers are encouraged to attend a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly meeting where the Managing Broker typically gives a progress report, office situations are discussed and sometimes problems are talked out.  It’s not unusual for the agents to tout their new listings or perhaps cry out for help when one of their listed properties isn’t selling.  Often Managing Brokers will use the office meeting to do some training or perhaps update everyone on a particular topic i.e. agency, license law, or fair housing.  Many times the office meetings are productive and worthwhile … sometimes, however, the meetings end up being non-productive, boring and a complete waste of time.

For a new agent looking to pick an office to work in, I always suggest that you ask the Managing Broker if you can attend their next office meeting as a guest.  This can be very revealing.  If the Managing Broker says that he doesn’t have a meeting scheduled, or doesn’t have office meetings at all, that just might make you want to turn and flee.  If, however, the Manager agrees to invite you to observe their next meeting, do it.  That way you’ll get to see just how well attended the meeting is.  If there are 40 agents in the office and only a handful attend, that might indicate that the agents are not truly committed or aren’t real team players.  You’ll also get to judge how you’re received.  Are the agents friendly?  Do they make you feel welcome?  It might sound a little trite, but you really need to be guided by your intuition.

Attending an office meeting before you make the decision to join a real estate company is time well spent.

A REALTOR® is a licensed real estate agent who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, (NAR) the largest trade group in the country.

Every agent is not a REALTOR®.  You become a REALTOR® after you pass your real estate course, pass the state license exam, join a real estate company and then join the National Association of REALTORS®.

According to the NAR, the term REALTOR has one, and only one, meaning:
"REALTOR® is a federally registered collective membership mark which identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics."
